Whatever you do, DO NOT grab a pair of tweezers and try to pull the tick out that way. What happens is that the head detaches from the body but continues to burrow in.

TAYLAH – OUR FIRST CHEMOTHERAPY CAT

Ten year old Taylah, a friendly grey and white domestic cat, started to lose weight about the middle of last year, and his intermittent vomiting became more frequent. After initial diagnostic tests (examination of blood, Xrays and ultrasound) Taylah’s owners agreed to exploratory surgery just before Christmas 2011. There was an aggressive cancer associated with Taylah’s intestinal tract – an adenocarcinoma – and pathologists were sure by its appearance that it must have already spread to distant tissues. The mass was causing vomiting by blocking passage of food, so the first decision for Taylah’s quality of life was to remove it. After a great recovery from surgery,Taylah was soon gaining the weight that he had lost. We sent his clinical history and the results of his pathology tests to the Veterinary Oncology Consultants for advice as to what we could do for Taylah to prevent the cancer spreading.

Taylah has just completed a 3 month course of chemotherapy. He has been gaining weight right through the course, which has consisted of injections and blood tests every two to three weeks. Apart from the occasional day of nausea straight after his treatment, and a few missing whiskars (actually most have fallen out!) Taylah has handled his treatment with the dignity and style and huge appetite that we have always known in him

If your dog is scratching all the time it is important to find out what is causing the itch. This can be quite difficult. While there are many common causes of canine scratching, it can take quite a bit of detective work to figure out the culprit. Try not to scratch your dog itchy spot for him. Believe it or not, scratching the itch, will only make the dog more itchy.

What is the best way to care for our furry friends as they age? Are there any things that we need to be aware of, and how much is “just because he’s old” and how much is something that we can treat?

At New Lambton Veterinary Clinic we have a special love for our senior citizens, and we can formulate an individualised plan for your pet. Older pets often suffer from arthritis, especially if they are a little overweight. They can develop

cataracts which make night vision very difficult, and some breeds will develop dry eye as they get older. Old pets have different nutritional needs to their needs back in the day, and can become more susceptible to a number of conditions such as Cushings Disease, and sometimes unfortunately cancer. All of the above can be treated to enhance the life quality of your pet. Ring us today for a chat about the best care for Grandma and Grandpa!

This was causing the eye to become inflamed as the normal protection of the eyelid was absent. We were not hopeful that we could fix the eye, as time had passed since the original accident, and the scarring prevented us from reconstructing the eyelid. After a few days of applying antibiotic cream to the eye (which soothed it a little) the decision was made to remove the eye to save Sim from chronic pain and irritation. Sim was given a full anaesthetic, including of course intubation and connection to the anaesthetic machine. In a relatively simple procedure the eye was removed and the very fine skin around the eye sutured together.
Sim is now back at the farm, doing well, and as you can see by her photo, looking gorgeous! Best of all her tall and handsome boyfriend, pictured right, still loves her!!
